Your data stays on your device

Placesmith is a Chrome extension for filling staging forms and managing placeholder assets. Core generation runs locally. There is no Placesmith account and no Placesmith backend.

Overview

This policy covers the Placesmith Chrome extension and this website (placesmith.app).

Placesmith does not collect, sell, or transmit your browsing data, form contents, or library assets to us. Scan, fill, image craft, convert, resize, crop, and clipboard tools all run in the browser.

The only optional network use in the extension is Pexels stock search, and only after you add your own API key in Settings.

Data stored on your device

Everything the extension remembers lives in chrome.storage.local on this browser profile. It is not synced through Placesmith.

That storage may include:

  • Popup navigation, theme, and UI state so the extension reopens where you left it.
  • Form presets you save (field labels and kinds from the scanned page, skipped fields, generated values, and any overrides you typed).
  • Your image library (up to 24 assets, about 1.5 MB each): uploads from disk, generated placeholders, and images you download from Pexels.
  • Color, size, and icon presets, plus an optional Pexels API key you enter in Settings.

When you scan a page, Placesmith reads form-control metadata in the active tab (labels, names, types, and similar hints) so it can generate matching placeholder values. That metadata stays in the popup and, if you save a preset, in local storage. Page contents are not uploaded.

Permissions

The extension asks Chrome for the access it needs to scan and fill the tab you are using.

  • activeTab and scripting — scan inputs and write generated values into the current tab when you ask.
  • storage — keep presets, assets, and settings on this device.
  • contextMenus — right-click to fill a field, the closest form, or a file upload.
  • Host access on all URLs — a content script is injected so scan, fill, and the context menu work on whatever page you open, including staging sites. The script listens for your actions; it does not scrape pages in the background or send them anywhere.

Optional Pexels search

Stock search is off until you add a free Pexels API key in Settings › General.

Search queries and that key are sent to api.pexels.com. Downloaded photos or videos are then stored in your local library. Pexels processes those requests under its own privacy policy and license.

Placesmith does not see or store your Pexels key on any server. Removing the key in Settings stops further Pexels requests.

This website

placesmith.app is a marketing and demo site, separate from the extension’s local storage.

The site uses Google Tag Manager, which may load analytics or similar tags (typically including cookies and standard request data such as IP address and browser type). See Google’s privacy policy.

The feedback form is hosted by Tally. Coffee support is handled by Buy Me a Coffee. Those services have their own policies for anything you submit there.

Sharing and sale

We do not sell personal data. The extension has no Placesmith servers to share data with. Optional third parties you choose to use (Pexels, Tally, Buy Me a Coffee, Google Tag Manager on this site) receive only what those products need to provide the feature you invoked.

Retention and deletion

Local extension data stays until you delete a preset or asset in the popup, clear site data for the extension, or uninstall Placesmith. Uninstalling removes chrome.storage.local for this extension.

Placesmith is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect children’s personal information.

Changes and contact

If this policy changes in a material way, we will update the date at the top of this page.

Questions about privacy, or anything else about Placesmith, can go through the feedback form.
